Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Validation of Psychological Instruments: Some Considerations

The increasing interest of the researchers in the field of psychology, especially in conducting cross—cultural studies led to the demand of the suitable validity and reliability of the psychological tests adaptation. One of the pressing problems in psychological tests adaptation pointed in this study is the mere translation done by concerned researchers of the psychological instruments in their native language without undergoing the approved test validation by experts and without identifying the reliability of translated psychological instruments.

Without the proper process of checking the validity and reliability of the translated psychological instruments, the results obtain from the translated psychological instruments can be confounded, unreliable or inconsistent. In order to ensure the validity and reliability of the adapted psychological instruments, the researchers highly suggested that the adapted psychological instruments undergo statistical analyses to achieve appropriate validity and reliability and to gain results that truly reflect similarities and differences across countries.
